PPA

Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) has been widely used as a nasal decongestant and for weight control. PPA was an ingredient in Acutrim®, Dexatrim®, and Robitussin®. A recent study shows that PPA can cause fatal strokes in some users. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has requested that all drug companies discontinue marketing products containing phenylpropanolamine, and their manufacturers have voluntarily pulled these drugs from store shelves.

Scientists at Yale University's School of Medicine recently published results of a study, which reported that taking PPA increases the risk of hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding into the brain or into tissue surrounding the brain) in women. Men may also be at risk. The FDA's Nonprescription Drugs Advisory Committee (NDAC) recently recommended that PPA not be considered safe for over-the-counter use, because of the seriousness of a stroke and the inability to predict who is at risk. Although the risk of hemorrhagic stroke is very low, the FDA recommends that consumers not use any products that contain phenylpropanolamine.

Lopez, Hodes, Milman & Skikos has filed a number of cases throughout the country against manufacturers of drugs containing PPA. The firm has also organized a group of lawyers from around the country to ensure the diligent prosecution of these cases. Lopez, Hodes, Milman & Skikos' early discovery efforts have unearthed documents and other evidence pointing to corporate liability for the injuries these products have caused to innocent and unaware consumers for a number of years.
